Let’s Move! Outside

Partners in Building a Love for Nature!

The Department of the Interior is the lead agency for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Outside initiative. The Department was joined by the YMCA of the USA and the National League of Cities (NLC) to coordinate efforts to bridge the growing disconnect between young people and the great outdoors by creating meaningful connections to nature through four pillars: play, learn, serve and work.

Through this partnership, the YMCA and National League of Cities, with support from American Express, are advancing the Department of the Interior's goal of seeding and supporting efforts that bring the four pillars of play, learn, serve and work alive for millions of children, young adults and veterans in communities across the country. Read more about this work in action.

Youth and families from across the country will learn new skills, engage with others and develop dedication to the great outdoors through service projects, recreation and environmental education. By offering consistent access to these public lands, Let’s Move! Outside is helping to inspire and foster nature lovers for life.

Every Kid in a Park

From Birmingham to Baltimore, Detroit to Denver, St. Louis to Los Angeles—and everywhere in between—natural wonders and historical monuments are just beyond our doorsteps. Every Kid In A Park encourages America’s youth to explore and appreciate our nation’s astounding beauty, its rich history, and its diverse culture by granting fourth graders FREE access to 2,000 federally managed lands, waters, and historic sites.

Together, we can make exploring these places a natural rite of passage for generations to come.  Visit everykidinapark.org to learn more.

Play, Learn, Serve, Work

Through our summer camps the Y partnered with the National Park Service (NPS) in 2015 to create a special summer play, learn, serve, work (PLSW) outdoor program for thousands of low-income, minority youth to have their first National Park experience.

This national, multi-site initiative is introducing children and youth to opportunities to play, learn, serve and work with the National Park Service.
