This adventurous position will ensure a safe, fun and efficient waterfront operation including, but not limited to swimming, (swim instruction, water games and activities), boating (rowboats, canoes, funyaks, funbugs, sailboats and their instruction) and to be a leader and active participant in all other aspects of the camp community.  This is a full time position that includes a great benefits package and an endless opportunity for fun!

At least 21 years of age with current Lifeguard certification; American Red Cross with waterfront certification or YMCA Lifeguard (preferred) and current CPR for Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification
Knowledge of the instruction of row boating and canoeing (certification preferred)
Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.

Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions. 
Supervises and implements all activities at the waterfront, including, but not limited to general swims, cabin activities, open activities, across the lake swims, morning polar bear swims, conference group swims; lifeguarding, supervising staff and ensuring proper ratios of guards to participants
Develops and implements a training and conditioning program that ensures the readiness of all aquatic adventure area and lifeguard staff throughout the summer
Schedules, implements and evaluates at least one swimmer search emergency drill each week.
Trains all staff in swimmer search procedures, general rules and safety guidelines and train all staff in the proper use of rowboats and canoes.
Checks all equipment and facilities weekly, reporting maintenance concerns for speedy repair; removes or isolates any equipment deemed unsafe/unusable.
Organizes and implements weekly “swim checks” of all participants and staff, assessing swim skills and determining if the individual may be a deep water swimmer; provides an orientation for all participants in general rules and policies of the waterfront
With staff, develops and implements a weekly schedule of activities and instruction; all activities are to be age appropriate and skill progressive; develops corresponding lesson plans for activities.
Maintain the waterfront inventory, reporting maintenance concerns to the appropriate supervisor.  Remove any equipment/supplies that are not deemed safe/usable.
With other aquatic staff, present awards to campers each week at the awards ceremony
Oversee and schedule all other programs utilizing the waterfront.  Act as the lifeguard if the program does not have certified guards and lookouts at the established guard to participant ratios
Assist in all aspects of the daily schedule, separate from waterfront activities including, but not limited to chapel, evening programs, special days and other administrative responsibilities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Directly supervises lifeguards and waterfront staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the association’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; developing, coaching, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
